About Swanbourne Nedlands SLSC

Welcome from the Club President & Club Captain

Hi there and welcome to the Swanbourne-Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club, the best surf club in Australia!

“Why is it so good?” I hear you ask. Well, that’s a bit like asking “Why is the sun hot?”, or “Why is water wet?” It’s a truth that we at Swanny hold to be self-evident…

Swanny, like all surf clubs, is part of one of the greatest organizations in the world, Surf Life Saving Australia. It is uniquely Australian, iconic, with a proud 105- year history of dedicated service to the community, and THE world leader in beach and ocean safety. As part of this great organisation, Swanny prides pride itself on the professional way we keep our beach safe during the summer season, patrolling and educating not only our members but others in the community

In addition, we provide a full range of beach/water sports and activities, in disciplines as diverse as surf board riding, surf boat rowing, beach sprinting and ironman racing. This includes not only the equipment, but also coaching and fitness and training regimes, and the opportunity to compete at a friendly club level and even state, national and international levels.

We also have a very active social scene, with parties, functions, road trips, surfing safaris and country and interstate carnivals. We have a junior development programme, training and instruction nippers from the age of 6 upwards, and a highly motivated education team. To organise all of this, we have a dedicated management team that helps raise money, purchase equipment, schedule events, co-ordinate resources and run all the activities the club is involved with.

Because of the broad range of activities we participate in, there is something for everyone, whether it be racing, coaching, teaching, fundraising, management or just partying hard. And this is where Swanny is the best surf club in Australia. We are a small club, with a relatively young membership base. This means it is easy to fit in, to get to know everyone, and to become involved. It is very easy for even newcomers to quickly become an important part of the club, at whatever level you want to contribute.

And this is the lesson that I have learnt over 25 years that I have been at Swanny; the energy and drive that the club has comes from its members, not its management team. You get out what you put in, and the rewards for being involved are immense. Your contribution not only helps the club, but empowers you to make your own decisions about how the club operates. This is YOUR club; YOU get involved and do things the way YOU want to do them. And Swanny will stay the best surf club in Australia.

SNSLSC Club President

A long, long time ago on a beach not so far away, a surf club was founded that was destined to shape history in it’s own image. An image that is built on friendship, a healthy social life, strong community support and even stronger members. Members who are trained to save others and who regardless of the odds (and sometimes their fitness) stand on the line ready to give it a go at their best. That club is Swanny!

After moving to Perth just under a year ago from Victoria I discovered SNSLSC who straight away welcomed me with friendly faces and a high level of energy and excitement at the beginning of summer. In my brief time at Swanny (so far) I have learnt that the club has a strong community spirit and takes the opportunity to improve its beach, its community and its members. Whether it’s the first aid skills, the competition carnivals, the chance to meet new friends or just another excuse to have a party and be close to the beach, Swanny has it all!

Swanny is a place where volunteering a few hours on the occasional weekend seems effortless and at times you feel guilty, because you just had your third leisurely swim for the morning and the whole time you have been chatting with your mates.

Swanny has been my second home, where I have made some of my closest friends, been inspired to get back into competing and training (although the club is quite relaxed when it comes to competing – only a few of us do it) and recently was lucky enough to be voted Club Captain. I highly encourage anyone to get involved at Swanny – particularly if you’re looking for something different, where you can give back to the community in a friendly, relaxed and social environment and at the same time keep fit and party with people you are guaranteed to have a good time with. As for the current members, you already knew all of this and have the stories to prove it! So get involved as much as you can and get ready for an epic 2012-13 season!!
