How fit do I need to be to be a Lifesaver?
Lifesaving and obtaining your Bronze does have a fitness element, but there’s no need to be daunted by this. A diverse range of candidates have become lifesavers at Swanny. We also have plenty of fitness training to help!
Are there any Pre-requisites?
The most common pathway to becoming to a lifesaver is to obtain your Bronze Medallion. To commence the Bronze Medallion you must:
Be a financial member of a Surf Life Saving Club, and have paid the Bronze course fee.
Be at least 15 years old by date of final assessment.
Complete a 400m swim under 9 minutes prior to commencing ocean based training.
Want to become a Lifesaver?
Ready to dive in and become a Swanny surf lifesaver? The most common pathway (for anyone aged 15+) is to obtain your Bronze Medallion - the core award to becoming a volunteer surf lifesaver in Australia, and keeping our beaches safe in the iconic red and yellow uniform. We run two Bronze courses each season and you can check out more information on our Bronze Medallion page.
Alternative pathways to becoming a lifesaver, with different pre-requisites to Bronze, do exist. These include a Surf Rescue Certificate (typically for those under 15), or by obtaining a Higher Award and patrolling as an Award Member. Please contact the Club Administrator to enquire about becoming an Award Member.
Once you've obtained your Bronze (or alternate Award), the main commitment as a lifesaver is a 3 hour patrol once a month, from October to March. Beyond that there is plenty of opportunities to get involved in our great social events, surf sports (like board and ski paddling), higher awards (e.g. Advanced Resus, IRBs) and many other aspects of Swanny. You'll be surprised how many things you can get involved in, and what you’d like to get involved in is up to you!
Being an active member of a surf life saving club as a Lifesaver offers almost endless opportunities for developing skills, keeping fit and contributing to the community!
