Classic day for Swanny race
By JANE WISHAW
Cottesloe pylon was ambushed with Swanbourne Life Saving Club colours as a record 1000 entrants splashed past in the Swanny Ocean Classic.
The pylon was redecorated under cover of darkness before swimmers, paddlers and runners took part the 2km race from Cottesloe to Swanbourne beach last weekend.
Club captain Ben Leonard said it was their biggest fundraising event of the year and supported lifesaving, education and development programs.
Andy Donaldson was the fastest swimmer, finishing in 22min. 20sec. to trail his 2016 time by just 13 seconds.
“The conditions this year could not have been better,” he said.
“Jordan McGrath punched through, leading for the first 300, 400 metres to the first cone and then I led for the following six cones to round out the races and was thrilled to cross the finish line.
“This race in particular has an incredible community vibe, with everyone really having a good time, lots of laughter and conversation, it is very inclusive."
“It’s also the perfect preparation for those competing in the Rottnest Channel Swim.”
The 19km race from Cottesloe beach to Rottnest will be held on February 21.
