Jon's Life Membership citation from the 2000-2001 SNSLSC Annual Report:

Jonathan McLean Broomhall

Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club welcomes its 21st Life Member, Jon Broomhall.

Jon is best described as a True Surf Lifesaver - a man who enjoys all that surf lifesaving has to offer, whilst remaining focused on our great humanitarian goal, lifesaving.

Jonathan McLean Broomhall, and better known at Swanny as Sconno, first joined the Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club in Season 1990/91, and straight away threw himself into the surf club lifestyle.

In season 1991/92, Jon took on the role of Assistant Secretary on the Club Committee, and thus began his incredible contribution to this club.

In season 1992/93, Jon took on the role of Chief Instructor, and for the next 3 seasons, he was responsible for the instruction and examination of many of the clubs current active members. Jon's outstanding efforts in surf education helped to establish a strong foundation for the growth of the club over the ensuing years.

Whilst Jon was busy helping others to achieve their recognised awards in Surf Life Saving, he also found a bit of spare time to pick up a few awards himself. In fact, Jon has an amazing record in this area of surf life saving, holding over 20 surf life saving awards.

In season 1994/95, Jon took on the role of Club Secretary, at an important time for this young club as it began to experience another period of growth. Jon was an instrumental part of the management committee that set in place many of the things that the club enjoys today, including the negotiation of patrol agreements that suited Swanbourne Beach, and the structuring and organisation of the club and its activities.

In 1996, Jon took on a position on the Board of Management of Surf Life Saving Western Australia as the Director of Lifesaving Services. Jon served Surf Life Saving Western Australia and Surf Life Saving Australia over the next three years whilst remaining an active member at Swanbourne Nedlands.

In season 1999/2000, the lure of life at Swanny brought Jon back to the club, and he took on the role of Club President, which he still holds today.

During his years on the management committee, Jon has been a tireless worker for the club, highlighted in recent years by the extraordinary efforts that he has put towards the new club buildings, which all things going well, should commence this winter.

As a competitor, Jon has had his fair of share of success at both club and state level. In season 1990/91 Jon won the Points Races for Beach Sprint, which he won again in season 1991/92 and season 1995/96. In season 1991/92, he also picked up his first club championship in the Beach Sprint, a feat he repeated again at the 1993/94 club championships.

At a state level, Jon was a member of the team that won a Bronze Medal in the Open Surf Boat Relay at the Surf Life Saving WA State Championships.

Over and above of all this, it is Jon's achievements as a surf lifesaver that really stands out. Jon first became a Patrol Captain in only his second year at the club, and has remained a Patrol Captain and active surf lifesaver, on the beach, doing his volunteer patrol duties, for over 10 years.

As a result of his skills and dedication as a surf lifesaver, Jon became an integral part of the club's Champion Patrol team that enjoyed success during the late part of the 1990's. Jon won five gold medals in a row at the Surf Life Saving WA State Championships from 1995 to 1999, helping this club to completely dominate the event at state level. Jon went on to the Australian Championships winning a bronze medal in 1995, a silver medal in 1996, a silver medal again in 1997, and yet another silver medal in 1999.

To this day, Jon remains a member of the Champion Patrol team, helping a new generation of surf lifesavers win two silver medals these past two seasons.

In a surf lifesaving career that has many highlights, Jon has also been a finalist in the Surf Life Saving Western Australia Lifesaver of the Year and the recipient of the 1997 Young Citizen of the Year from the City of Nedlands.

The members and Life Members, past and present, are very proud of Jon and his contribution to the club. Thank you Jon, and congratulations on becoming the 21st Life Member of the Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club.
