Jump in for the Swanny Ocean Classic

The Swanny Ocean Classic will return next Saturday, January 31, when about 1000 swimmers, runners and paddlers are expected to take the plunge in one of Perth’s most popular community sporting events.

It will be the 41st time that Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club has run the event, known for its relaxed atmosphere and strong community spirit.

Club captain Ben Leonard said the Ocean Classic brings the community together for a “safe, fun ocean swim right in our own backyard”.

“It’s a uniquely local event – the iconic coastline, great atmosphere on the beach, and a shared love of fitness and the ocean,” he said.

“Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club is proud to deliver this annual event and incredibly grateful to the many volunteers, participants, and supporters who make it such a fantastic day.”

The Ocean Classic covers the coastline from Cottesloe to Swanbourne and offers a range of ways to take part including an ocean swim of about 2km, a beach run, a stand-up paddleboard race and traditional racing mal events.

It is designed to be inclusive, to attract participants of all ages and abilities, from first-time ocean swimmers to experienced competitors.

The swim course starts at Cottesloe Beach in front of the Indiana Teahouse and finishes at Swanbourne Beach.

Water safety personnel, support boards and clearly marked buoys are in place to guide competitors along the course.

Neighbouring Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club and North Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club support the event.

Registrations cost between $30 and $49 and are open now. Entries close shortly before race day, unless sold out prior.

Revenue helps to fund surf life saving activities at Swanbourne Beach.
